Openings and closings in Renton

When a restaurant I like closes, it just breaks my heart. Maybe the restaurant owner feels a great sense of relief, but I'm just crushed. And it's happened to so many Renton restaurants over the years. It's a tough industry. When Gene's Ristorante on S 3rd was sold, it practically killed me. Gene was happy to no longer be working a million hours a week, and with many other irons in the fire, he wasn't able to clone himself. But hooboy was it a great place. I still miss than antipasto.

When Japan Thai closed, it hurt. The owners were practically doing handstands they were so happy to get some semblance of a life back. But I was sad. Japanese and Thai food go really well together.

When the Aloha BBQ on the Maple Valley Highway closed, I was devastated. That was another place that should have been a lot more successful than it was, fresh, creative, and inexpensive.

About a month or two ago, Shuga Jazz Bistro closed. They had an insanely great Happy Hour, as well as live jazz music, and the best shrimp and grits I've ever had. It was always friendly and welcoming, even if I was too cheap to pay the cover charge to see the entertainment.

And Diamond Lil's Casino has been gone for a while. I'm not a casino type person, but they had five dollar dinner specials! And they were even pretty good!

But new places do open, and some of them turn out to be places I enjoy going to. In no particular order, Four Generals Brewing, 229 Wells Ave S, brews very good beer on the premises, and is a comfortable space to hang out in. They don't serve food, but feel free to bring your own.

Yummy Juans's recently opened at 900 S. 3rd St. it's Mexican, and it's very good. I'm not sure, but I think within a two mile radius, renton might lead the Seattle area in tacos per square mile, although Burien, White Center, South Park, and Kent might also make that claim. Yummy Juan's makes a particularly great fish taco, using grilled instead of deep fried fish. The homemade salsas are especially good.

El Burrito Loco just moved, as their old location is being torn down to build a middle school. The new location is right next to the Renton post office at  306 Williams Ave S. in what used to be the Go Deli. El Burrito Loco is the same family as the El Kiosko people across from Renton High School on S 2nd St, and also the same folks as the Taqueria El Asadero bus on Rainier Avenue in South Seattle.
Very good, inexpensive, and in a more comfortable location.

Smoking Monkey Pizza, 613 S. 3rd St is expanding into the former hair studio next door. Crustwise, I can't imagine more than one or two places anywhere in Seattle any better, and it's consistently very good.

Sunset Gyro is now Sunset Bistro at 354 Sunset Blvd N, where Omar Khayam used to be. It's Romanian, and the stuffed cabbage and schnitzel are very good, although you can still get schwaramah and gyros there. But stick to the Romanian items.

Any other places now open that I've overlooked?
