Restaurant Comings and Goings

Much of Seattle is in mourning over the closure of Paseo, a very popular Cuban/Caribbean sandwich joint. Paseo had a couple of locations, one in Fremont, and one in Shilshole(Ballard). Nobody's quite sure why they closed, but a lawsuit is ongoing filed by employees who said they weren't paid, weren't allowed breaks, and were discriminated against because they were Hispanic. The owner was Cuban, a guy with the best name ever of Lorenzo Lorenzo, and the employees were Mexican. Both locations had lines out the door, so I don't think it was a case of the old Yogi Berra line " Nobody goes there anymore, it's too popular."

In Renton, many are mourning the closure of A Terrible Beauty, the Irish pub on S 2nd ST in downtown Renton. It too was very successful, often crowded( in a large space, even), had a great selection of beer, and very possibly the best Reuben sandwich in the Seattle area. Really out of this world, maybe the best Reuben on the planet. After opening in Renton, they opened a sister location in West Seattle, and more recently opened a branch in South Lake Union, which is very expensive prime real estate near the Amazon.com headquarters. Evidently it was the failure of the South Lake Union branch that took down all three of the Terrible Beauties. It's too bad. It was one of the prides of Renton.

And then this:

The Dog & Pony is getting a makeover on the Food Network, on national TV. I remember when it opened nearly 15 years ago. They took over a dilapidated, dirty, smoky bar and transformed it. It became Renton's premiere beer place, with 32 rotating taps, and served way better than average pub food. The Smoked Chicken Burrito , the Fish N' Chips, the Carnitas are exceptional, as is their in house made Veggie Burger. It is not expensive, it is unpretentious, it is friendly, it is comfortable. In decent weather, you can sit outside on the large patio with your dog, drink great beer, and have a tasty, inexpensive meal . What does it need a makeover for? I can see, from a business standpoint, that they need new energy and ideas. And I hope that whatever the geniuses at the Food Network come up with, that it's enormously successful. But I'm going to miss what's there now.

  1. Sorry to hear about the closing of A Terrible Beauty. My step-son took us there when we would visit him in Renton. I liked the place. Should of had the Reuben, though.
