Three Bakeries

A good bakery is a major weakness of mine. My taste in items produced by a bakery is broad. Sweet is good. Savory is good. Bread is good. Pastries are good. Pie is good. Cookies are good.  I prefer places that use good ingredients, and have something special to offer. Some bakeries in Seattle are well known and very good.  Places like Bakery Nouveau, Macrina, Columbia City Bakery, etc.  If you don't know about these places you don't get around much in Seattle. But because these places are busy and well known, it really wouldn't serve anybody for me to talk about them. What's less known are the very good bakeries in places you wouldn't expect. Like Renton and Kent.

Sugar, Flour, and More, in the Renton Highlands at 2830 Sunset Ln NE in the Renton Highlands, is an exceptional place. There are a lot of French inspired items, Mexican inspired items, and one of a kind items invented by the owner/baker, like Huitchacotle (corn fungus) bread. The baguettes are fantastic. Bolillos and Telera Mexican sandwich rolls. Macarons. Cakes, pies, cookies, muffins are all top notch. They make mochas and hot chocolates from real chocolate, and have several varieties to choose from. They've got savory filled pastries, with fillings like ham and artichoke, or smoked salmon. It's a friendly place.

The M Bakery in Kent is another fun place. At 21224 84th Ave S, they focus on locally sourced ingredients, and have an Armenian influence. They make piroshkis there, out of a puff pastry dough, so they're a little different( and great). They make wraps, so you can sit and have lunch there. The coffee is fantastic, as are the cookies. Really nice place.

The Aladdin Bakery & Deli, at 24202 104th Ave SE, on Kent's East Hill, is a middle eastern bakery. They make pita sandwiches, but their pita is actually the superior Samoon, which they call Iraqi bread, a puffy, oblong shaped pita cousin that's incredibly delicious, and perfect for filling with schwarma, or falafel.  But even more intriguing are the pastries. It was there I got introduced to Znod Al Fit, a filo dough stuffed pastry with coddled cream and rosewater. It's the best thing ever. They're delicious, and they don't cost much. They also have baklava and many other pastries often thought of as Greek. They have an oven there that reminds me of a tandoor. If I lived closer, I'd be at this place all the time. And I'd weigh 600 pounds.

  1. Hello! I just came across your blog, my husband and I are about to do the same thing as you wrote on your Hippies in Renton blog - we are moving from Seattle out to Renton - and I am sad about the lack of local blogs and news! I hope you keep posting!
