CHEESECAKE, MEXICAN SEAFOOD, GOOD RYE BREAD, AND MORE!

As a kid, I had really good eating habits. My mother would offer me candy, and I would ask if I could have some cucumber instead. I didn't like sweets, and I didn't like rich foods.
Unfortunately for my waistline, my tastes have changed. I now like sweet, rich foods.
Like cheesecake. It took me years to appreciate cheesecake.

But here we are, in a land( the Seattle area in general) not known for cheesecake. So I could easily avoid indulging. Until now...

River Valley Cheese, at 826 S 3rd St in beautiful downtown Renton, was, until the Covid 19 pandemic, a place to take cheese making classes. Kristi, the big cheese of the company, liked to make cheesecake out of cheese that she made. She didn't teach people how to make the cheesecake, but she taught people how to make the cheese.
And then because of Covid-19 related regulations, she was not allowed to teach classes in her facility any longer, in order to ensure social distancing. Things looked grim, and it looked like River valley Cheese would disappear like so many other businesses in the current business environment. But wait!
She started selling her cheesecakes. She opened her space to a few other vendors and held weekend markets at her facility, and she sold her cheesecakes there. After the Christmas holiday, it was suggested that she keep selling the cheesecakes. She did, and she's still doing it, with lots of community support.
The process is not unlike some other ways to get some foodstuffs these days. You go to the website, you order and pay for the cheese, and you make an appointment to come and get it. If you're nearby, she can deliver it if you can't make it in.
The cheesecake? Oh, it's delicious. It's not classic NY cheesecake, which I also love. It's fluffier, less dense, softer. And really, really good. Go to their website, and order a cheesecake.

Meanwhile, the former hookah lounge at 111 Airport Way now has a sign up. It will be El Muchacho Alegre, and it will be a Mexican seafood restaurant. The place opened as Jolly Boy around 1960, and has seen many incarnations, including the Black River Inn, Lermond's, Mimosa's,  Kazi's Grill, and Kazi's Hookah Lounge. I'm sure I'm missing a few. I love Mexican food,  I love seafood, and it's close to home. Also, muchacho in Spanish is young man, and alegre is happy and cheerful. Is it just a coincidence that Jolly Boy is back, this time in Spanish?

Euroslice Deli, the Russian store within the DK Market 720 Lind Ave SW( a few blocks from Walmart), does their own baking. They open at 10 AM, so get there early if you want some great light rye bread, or piroshkies, or a bunch of other things. And the DK is the only food purveyor where I really enjoy shopping, so it's a win-win.

Finally, the Red Tea Room, the corporate caterer who has pivoted into a one day a week bagel bakery( among other things) has successfully taken care of one of the issues their bagels had, namely that the toppings didn't stay on. I'm still most enamored with their plain bagels, which are excellent, but if you like toppings, at least they will stay on the bagels now. Like River Valley Cheese, go to their website ( theredtearoom.com/bakery, order and pay for the bagels, and go to their facility on Sunday mornings to pick up the bagels.
