King Donuts, and The Local 907

King Donuts, in Seattle's Rainier Beach neighborhood( 9232 Rainier Ave S.) and The Local 907(907 S. 3rd St, Renton) both made the national news over the last few days.
The owners of the King Donut( and teriyaki and laundromat) , Heng and Chia Pol Hay,were robbed and beaten as they were locking up for the night. They're in the hospital recovering. This is the first time in their 30 years of owning the place that they've had any incident at the business, minor or major. Rainier Beach is not considered one of Seattle's more desirable neighborhoods, but King Donut has been a community treasure, a haven with a very diverse clientele. The donuts are superb, the teriyaki is delicious, and you can wash your clothes there while you dine. It's a family run business, with the daughters now in charge. Very friendly place with good, inexpensive food. Don't let this incident scare you away. There's been an outpouring of support since the story hit the news. May it stay that way.

A couple of miles down the road in downtown Renton, a stand up comedian, Dylan Avila, was attacked onstage with a baseball bat, and is in the hospital recovering. The Local 907 is a bar/eatery which has open mic comedy night on Mondays. Dylan Avila, himself a comic, was hosting the open mic when he got attacked. As I understand it, he told someone who had performed on a previous open mic there that he was no longer welcome to perform there, due to being both extremely tasteless and not funny. That someone is the guy who came after him with a baseball bat. Fellow comics and audience members stopped the guy after the second bash to the head, and caused injuries to the attacker, who is being held in jail without bail. It speaks well for Renton, I think, the quick response to the attack.
The 907 is a great place. With food ranging from Cobb Salad to Black Bean Burgers to fried string beans, the place also has a good selection of local microbrewed beers, and lots of big screens to watch sports. It's a mellow, friendly place with great service.

Neither of these incidents should not mean that you should stay away from these places. In fact, do the opposite and go there. You will not get mugged getting a cup of coffee or a donut from King Donuts.
And the Local 907 is a perfectly safe place. I was there this evening, and lived to tell about it.  Go there. The food's good. Happy Hour rocks.
